A Resource Sensitive Interpretation of Lexical Functional Grammar
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper investigates whether the fundamental linguistic insights and intuitions of Lexical-Functional Grammar (LFG), which is usually presented as a “constraintbased” linguistic theory, can be reformulated in a “resource-sensitive” framework. In the approach investigated here, LFG’s f-descriptions are replaced with expressions from a multi-modal propositional logic (with permutation and limited contraction). It turns out that some linguistic analyses that required non-monotonic devices in LFG (such as the “constraint equations” in the Andrews (1982) analysis of Icelandic) can be straight-forwardly expressed in the framework presented here. Moreover, a CurryHoward correspondence between proofs in this logic and -terms provides a semantic interpretation as a by-product of the process of showing syntactic well-formedness.

Lexical-Functional Grammar and Order-Free Semantic Composition
This paper summarizes the extension of the theory of lexical-functional grammar to include a formal, model-theoretic, semantics. The algorithmic specification of the semantic interpretation procedures is order-free which distinguishes the system from other theories providing model-theoretic interpretation for natural language. Attention is focused on the computational advantages of a semantic i...
متن کاملType-driven semantic interpretation and feature dependencies in R-LFG
This paper describes a new formalization of Lexical-Functional Grammar called R-LFG (where the “R” stands for “Resource-based”). The formal details of R-LFG are presented in Johnson (1997); the present work concentrates on motivating R-LFG and explaining to linguists how it differs from the “classical” LFG framework presented in Kaplan and Bresnan (1982). This work is largely a reaction to the ...
متن کاملLexical-functional Grammar of the Croatian Language: Theoretical and Practical Models
Formal description aims to find the most suitable way to formalize a certain segment of the language, or some language phenomena at morphological, lexical, syntactic or semantic level. There is a variety of formal models based on different approaches in order describe the natural language as much as possible. One type of such formal model is described in the thesis entitled “Lexical-Functional ...
متن کاملLexical metaphor as affiliative bond in newspaper editorials: a systemic functional linguistics perspective
From the perspective of systemic functional linguistics (SFL), lexical metaphors are recognized as a resource for enacting interpersonal meaning in discourse. Within the APPRAISAL framework, they constitute a means for ‘provoking’ an attitudinal interpretation. While the interpersonal function of lexical metaphors is well recognized in SFL, there have been relatively few studies that focus spec...
متن کاملLexical Functional Grammar
The term Lexical Functional Grammar (LFG) first appeared in print in the 1982 volume edited by Joan Bresnan: The Mental Representation of Grammatical Relations, the culmination of many years of research. LFG differs from both transformational grammar and relational grammar in assuming a single level of syntactic structure. LFG rejects syntactic movement of constituents as the mechanism by which...
